Our day began in Bath station, catching a super slow train to Portsmouth, a brief stop at a pub then the ferry to Caen’s ferry port, Ouistreham. A fine crossing followed by an overnight in the local Ibis hotel.
Ouistreham derives its name from the French
ouistre - 'oyster' and the Saxon ham or ''village', the origin of the name a reminder of the history of
the region, which was fought over between England and France for
centuries.

The town is linked to the D-Day landings when No 4 Commando landed at Ouistreham (Sword Beach) and fought their way to Pegasus Bridge, with the Free French section of the No 10 Inter Allied Commando given the honour of spearheading the advance.
